A Desert Guide to Luxury Travel

From the neon lights of Las Vegas to the vast and empty Sahara, the desert is a magnificent place – no matter where it is in the world. But the days of Lawrence of Arabia have long since gone and a stay in the desert can now be one of total luxury. With a variety of accommodation available such as luxury hotels, lodges and safari camps, the days of ‘roughing it’ are by choice only.
There are many deserts to visit but one that will immediately spring to mind is Las Vegas – truly an oasis in the Nevada Desert. With so much to do and see, gambling may be one of the last things on your list, but when it comes to over-the-top luxury, holidays in Las Vegas never disappoint. Luxury is what Vegas do best, from the superb hotels to the opulence of the casinos – you may not win millions at the tables, but you will certainly feel like a millionaire. Take a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon and ask the pilot to land right inside for a once in a lifetime experience. Experience the flamboyance of the shows and the excitement of the casinos and – not to be missed – do take a romantic ride in a gondola at the Venetian where you will be serenaded by mandolins, as if transported to Italy, but with the glitz that only Las Vegas can provide.

The Valley of the Kings, the Great Sphinx, the Giza pyramids and the ancient temples of Luxor – where else is it possible to see so much history. With its fascinating attractions and palatial hotels, Egypt has plenty to offer the luxury holidaymaker with many offering day trips to Egypt’s ancient attractions. It is possible to take tours to visit the many famous sites, such as the Coptic monasteries, that are situated in the Eastern Desert, to the Siva Oasis which is located in the Libyan Desert, on an ancient date trade route. The oasis was essential to the route, as the natural springs and palm trees gave travellers water and shade from the desert heat.

Botswana, especially in the Cho be and Okavango Delta regions, is certainly one of the finest safari destinations in Africa. However, with luxury accommodation in the desert now available, why not consider an amazing holiday with a difference – go on a dune-driving safari in Botswana, taking in the Kalahari Desert and the San Bushman culture. The Okavango River runs right through the Kalahari, creating a stunning inland waterway, which is home to an amazing amount of wildlife and birds. Stay in a luxury lodge and have the holiday of a lifetime.
